Our studio at ZenLife Center for Healing provides several Yoga Nidra reset classes throughout the week for those seeking restful rejuvenation. It may look like taking a nap and you may feel like you took a nap, but it’s so much more! Yoga Nidra, also known as yogic sleep, is a meditation-like practice often done in one position – the savasana (lying flat on your back).
This practice is designed to invoke peace and healing as you learn to shift between sleep and wakefulness, feeling both states of being with your awareness. One session of Yoga Nidra offers you the healing equivalent of a several hour nap!
Yoga Nidra blurs the lines between a yoga practice and a meditation. Some may get the two confused because they associate yoga with poses and flow. However, Yoga Nidra is done without movement.
But like meditation, you strive to reach a calmer state and relax your mind and body. Meditation focuses on awareness while awake. It allows our brains to reach the theta state, where we consciously let our thoughts come and go.
On the other hand, Yoga Nidra is awareness while asleep. It actually takes you farther, all the way into the delta state which is the deepest stage of sleep, while holding onto your awareness.
Anyone is welcome and encouraged to come and experience the best power nap of your life! As always, any level of experience or knowledge is perfectly acceptable – come as you are.
While Yoga Nidra is for anyone, it can be especially helpful to those who struggle with anxiety, insomnia, and depression. If you find yourself still fighting your own thoughts during a normal meditation, this practice may be just the thing to initiate the deep relaxation you need.
Bring your own yoga mat and come in something comfortable – and it doesn’t have to be your yoga clothes but whatever you feel good in to lay down. While sitting upright, you’ll begin with a grounding practice and mild stretching to tune into your body.
With the blankets our studio also provides, you will then lie down on your yoga mat with your head on a folded blanket, another blanket to cover you, and more at your side if needed. The bolster block goes under your knees for support.
After your instructor takes you through, they’ll invite you to come out of it at your own pace. You may feel groggy for a few minutes as it is the equivalent of a several hour nap, so give yourself time to come out of it.
