What is Ashtanga Yoga?
Ashtanga yoga has its roots in the early 1900s: First developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the midcentury. This form of yoga, similar to other types, focuses on vigorous movement through a series of postures linked with your breath.
The term “Ashtanga” is a combination of two words in Sanskrit: “ashta,” which means 8, and “anga,” which refers to limbs. For that reason, the purpose of Ashtanga Yoga is to combine all 8 limbs of yogic philosophy into one practice.
There are six sequences in the whole method, each consisting of a set series of postures that build on one another. Overall, Ashtanga is a very athletic and dynamic form of yoga.
How Is Ashtanga Yoga Unique?
In contrast to other more gentle forms of yoga, an Ashtanga Yoga practice focuses on synchronizing the breath with poses to create a full-body, detoxifying workout. Ashtanga can be significantly more of a “workout” than other types of yoga.
Ashtanga yoga class is different from a typical workout vinyasa flow class that moves from one pose to the next. The goal in Ashtanga yoga is to focus on your breath, then pull your attention to what your body and breath are doing together, which is otherwise known as a bandha, or “energy lock.”
What Are the Benefits of Ashtanga Yoga?
- Stress relief – By focusing on your breath, you clear your mind of worry, fatigue, and the stress that accompanies so many of us in our everyday lives.
- Exercise – Moving your body to the rhythm of your breath helps your muscles, joints, and ligaments retain strength and flexibility.
- Detox – You will likely experience detoxifying sweats with each practice that help your body stay healthy.
- Mental health – You may notice that your mind feels calm after each session as well.
Remember that this list is not guaranteed or exclusive! Everyone may experience additional benefits unique to them and their situation.
Who Should Take Ashtanga Yoga Classes?
Of course, anyone can practice Ashtanga Yoga and reap the benefits. If you love routines, this may be a great fit for you. The set sequence of asanas provides a dynamic yet routine practice. With regular participation, you will learn what to expect and be able to clearly witness your growth over time!
However, Ashtanga practices may not be ideal for someone with significant medical limitations or prefers a slower style of practice. Or, it may just not be the right choice for you on that specific week or day. Always listen to what your body is telling you and honor its wishes!
What to Expect When Beginning Your Practice?
We encourage new students to arrive a little early and introduce themselves to the teacher and orient themselves with the studio. It’s important to start at the beginning with Ashtanga, even if you are a more advanced student in other areas. The primary pose builds a foundation to allow greater knowledge for the series of poses that come next.
Your instructor will assist you with the poses and breathwork involved. Follow their lead and always feel free to ask questions!
