At some point — maybe this week, maybe this morning — something in you shifted. An old belief loosened its grip. A relationship changed shape. A habit fell away. If you’ve been looking for a rebirth meditation that meets you exactly where you are in the middle of that shift, this one is for you.
Every Tuesday evening at ZenLife Center for Healing, we come together to meditate, reflect, and help each other become more fully who we’re meant to be. This week, Melissa J. Seil-Butler opened class with a question that our co-teacher Quentin put to the room — and it’s one that might stay with you long after you finish reading this.
“Who do you choose to be?”
That was the question. Simple. Quiet. And surprisingly hard to answer. Because most of us spend our energy reacting to what life throws at us — not intentionally choosing who we are inside of it.
Melissa’s teaching that night centered on something she finds deeply true: we don’t go through rebirth once. We go through it over and over, constantly shedding and becoming. The caterpillar doesn’t enter the chrysalis knowing what it will look like on the other side. It just surrenders to the process. And something new emerges.
She shared the example of becoming a new mother. You don’t just have a baby and stay the same person. You are reborn. Your priorities shift. The way you see time changes. Your sense of self — who you are, what you value — completely reorganizes around this new life you’re responsible for. You become someone you weren’t before. That’s rebirth. And it doesn’t only happen in the dramatic moments. It happens in the quiet ones too.
Quentin added something that landed hard in the room that night: “It takes a lot of effort to actually be whatever it is that you say or claim or profess to be.” It’s one thing to say “I’m becoming more patient.” It’s another to practice patience when you’re stuck in traffic and already late. The gap between who we say we want to be and who we actually show up as in any given moment — that’s the work. That’s where the meditation comes in.
After the teaching, Melissa guided us into stillness. The meditation itself invites you to settle into your body, quiet the noise of the day, and then ask yourself: Who am I choosing to become? Not in a lofty, abstract way — but in a real, felt way. What does the next version of you feel like in your chest? In your shoulders? In the way you hold your breath?
There’s a beautiful moment in the meditation where Melissa talks about thoughts and their power. She mentioned a conversation she’d had after class — someone who had started filling their days with news and podcasts full of doom and gloom. And sure enough, they started feeling heavy, anxious, out of sync. Our thoughts shape our experience more than we realize. What we feed our minds matters. This practice is a chance to choose differently — even for just a few minutes.
This video runs about 28 minutes and includes both the opening teaching and the guided meditation. Here’s what you’ll find:
No experience needed. Just show up as you are. If you’d like to explore more sessions like this, you can follow ZenLife on YouTube where we publish our Tuesday meditations each week.
