What Is Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar Yoga is rooted in the 2,500-year-old classical yoga tradition of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, descended from Hatha Yoga. One of the most widely practiced forms of yoga, this practice emphasizes alignment of body, breath, mind, and spirit with each yoga pose.

Iyengar Yoga is all about precision! Commonly done with props like a block, blanket, chair, or belt, this practice focus on:

  • Alignment: Achieving correct posture while respecting your body’s thresholds.
  • Sequencing: The progressive order of the poses.
  • Timing: The length of time you hold a pose is longer than other yoga practices.

How is Iyengar Yoga Unique?

Iyengar Yoga is far more than a simple exercise. What elevates the practice from exercise to yoga is intelligent action and the infusion of awareness throughout your entire being.

The use of props also makes Iyengar a unique practice as it reaches a broader audience. Now used in yoga classes of all styles, the skillful use of equipment such as chairs, straps, blocks, and more enables everyone regardless of age, strength, or flexibility, to benefit from the study and practice of yoga.

Iyengar instructors must train for years and pass rigorous assessments to receive certification to teach. This is unusual at a time when teachers can be certified in a month in some other methods.

What Are the Benefits of Iyengar Yoga?

  • Increased strength and stamina – holding asanas for extended periods of time strengthens your muscles and increases their endurance.
  • Improved overall health – Iyengar Yoga benefits both your physical and mental health by increasing your focus and energy and alleviating the negative effects of stress.
  • Alleviate postural/structural problems – This practice increases flexibility and strengthens the muscles needed for good posture. It supports your body’s natural movement and prevents injury.
  • Ease emotional tension – B.K.S. Iyengar once said “Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured.” When we learn to embrace this notion, the emotional unease in our lives can be reduced.

Who Should Take Iyengar Yoga Classes?

Iyengar Yoga is truly a practice for everyone, regardless of prior experience. Like we mentioned above, this practice is especially beneficial for individuals requiring additional support.

Always keep in mind any serious injuries, pregnancies, or health conditions that may lead to an unsafe yoga practice.
