Have you ever noticed that we appreciate smooth times more deeply when we’ve experienced some bumps along the way? This week at ZenLife Center for Healing, Melissa led a profound mindfulness meditation for balance focused on the theme of harmony. Every Tuesday at 8:15 PM, our community explores different dimensions of mindfulness, both in-person and via livestream.

Melissa explored the concept of harmony from a unique perspective. First, she compared harmony in life to musical harmony—a collection of different sounds that create something beautiful together. Then, she challenged our common assumption that harmony means everything going smoothly.
“When we think of harmony, if you think of it from a music standpoint, it’s like a collection of different sounds that come together and create something really beautiful,” Melissa explained. “We tend to think that if things are going well in my life, it means that everything’s going smoothly, but we know that’s not the case.”
Melissa emphasized how contrast in our experiences helps us appreciate the smooth times. The ups, downs, and bumps aren’t problems to avoid—they’re essential parts of a harmonious life. Without contrast, we wouldn’t recognize or appreciate the peaceful moments.
The guided meditation began with proper posture instructions. Melissa recommended sitting tall with crossed legs in an easy seated pose, hips higher than knees. She offered alternatives for those who might be uncomfortable, including lying down with feet on the floor and knees up to prevent falling asleep.
“Think of the skin on your chest rolling up and down and over your back,” Melissa suggested, sharing a cue from yoga teacher Carlin. She encouraged participants to tuck their chin slightly, creating a nice line with sit bones sinking into the cushion.
During the mindfulness meditation for balance, we focused on being fully present with our bodies. We observed the expansion and contraction of our skin with each breath. We noticed sensations behind our eyelids, at the back of our throats, and throughout our bodies.
“For tonight, I’d like you to allow yourself to be very present with this container that is your body,” Melissa guided. Hence, we practiced staying with physical sensations while letting stories and thoughts “move down the river,” focusing purely on breath, digestion, heartbeat, and bodily sensations.
The meditation reminded us that getting out of our heads doesn’t require much—just a little coaxing and focused attention. As a result, many participants shared positive experiences afterward, feeling more centered and balanced.
Our weekly meditation sessions welcome everyone, from complete beginners to experienced practitioners. There’s no right or wrong way to meditate—just taking time for yourself is what matters most.
