Sometimes life catches up with us in ways we don’t expect.
I’ve been on this kind of quest for health throughout my entire life—it’s always been there, but you know how it is. Sometimes we’re really good about things, and sometimes we’re not. That’s just being human.
I can be a workaholic. I’ll hide my life in my work really easily because it feels purposeful, it feels good. Then you just kind of keep going and going and going, and you forget that you have to take time to take care of yourself.
Prefer to watch on video instead of read?
After my previous life completely bottomed out my health, I promised myself I’d never do that again. But we lie to ourselves sometimes, don’t we?
Recently, I could feel it was catching up with me again—like I’d put myself back on that same treadmill. Even after taking time last year to get back on track and practice what I preach, I could still feel that things were a little out of sync.
That’s when I stumbled upon something beautiful on Insight Timer.
Very strangely, I found this heart opening mantra, and we actually practice it the way this woman does it on the app. There are lots of different ways you can do it, but I love this one—it’s really pretty.
As I was doing this chant for a while, all of a sudden I felt like I was being directed down this path toward everything my heart needed. Because it is a heart opening mantra, it started opening up exactly what I needed to address.
The mantra is “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.”
I know it sounds like a lot, but don’t worry—it’s really not as hard as you think. When you do it very singingly, it just locks into your brain.
This mantra is incredible because it clears our mind by driving out the negativity that clouds our judgment. You know, those judgments that hinder our growth and development.
I’m very judgy—and I know I’m judgy because I judge myself. I judge other people, therefore I judge myself. Even though I catch myself when I judge other people and think “Oh, I shouldn’t do that, that was mean,” I know it’s inside of me.
The only reason we judge others is because we’re really good at judging ourselves. It’s like a circle. Every time you catch yourself judging somebody else, just ask yourself: “When do I do that to myself?” Probably more than you think.
This mantra works on purification of both the heart and the mind. Think about it—we have three brains: the brain in our head, the brain in our heart, and the gut brain. If we can clear all the energy out of those three centers, imagine what we can do for ourselves.
When I practice this heart opening mantra, I often feel compelled to put my hands on my heart. As a Reiki practitioner, I know certain things I can do, and I’ll feel like I need to hold my heart and work with my heart while chanting.
I’m not kidding you—every single thing I’ve needed during this healing path has just weirdly shown up. As Wayne Dyer said, “If somebody told him that crystals got rid of hemorrhoids, he would get a crystal chair.” We kind of look at it like that—if there’s nothing to lose, let’s just try it.
Find a comfortable position where you can settle in and feel at ease. Take a nice deep breath in and let it go.
The mantra breaks down like this: Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya
Start by chanting it slowly, letting the vibrations resonate through your body. You can join in whenever you feel ready—there’s no pressure to be perfect.
Notice the vibration in your body as you chant. Pay attention to what feels different inside of you, and then notice if anything feels different outside of you too.
After practicing this heart opening mantra, I always feel this incredible sense of peace. It’s one of those feel-good experiences that you just don’t want to go away.
Just like after a good Kundalini class, you want to ride that feeling as long as you can. Don’t do anything to take yourself out of that beautiful space—just let it carry you.
You can find this practice and many others on Insight Timer. Look up “40 days of chanting” if you want to dive deeper into this particular heart opening mantra practice.
Sometimes our hearts need clearing in ways our minds haven’t figured out yet. This ancient practice of using a heart opening mantra creates space for that healing to happen naturally.
When we clear the negativity and judgments that cloud our inner wisdom, we make room for the love and peace that’s always been there underneath.
