Every first Friday night at ZenLife, the lights go down and the music turns up for a creative celebration of expressive dance and play. We are approaching our 10th month of the Archetypal Dance Adventure community project and we will be exploring the Hermit Archetype, card 9 of the Major Arcana of the Rider/Waite version of the Tarot. It just so happens, numerologically, and synchronistically that 2025 is a 9 year, so January is a potent time to be engaging with this complex, multi-faceted figure.
Archetypes are characters, beings, or symbols that are collectively shared throughout the human experience. At the turn of the 20th century, Carl Jung brought this concept into the mainstream through his work of analytical psychology and the process of individuation. The idea is that we all experience similar themes within our unique life stories that are linked throughout the great epochs of our myths and histories.
The Tarot is a story of the human journey, complete with themes of relationship dramas, money management, creative endeavors, and mental strategy.
The first 22 cards of the Tarot Deck are known as the major arcana. These are the heavy hitters of the deck. The Fool, The Magician, Wheel of Fortune, and ones that may make us a little uncomfortable like The Devil (also known as the Shadow) and Death (also known as transformation).
The deeper we look into how these archetypes play out in our lives, the better we are able to work with them consciously and use them to help process emotions, achieve goals, or align with our desires.
The modalities of dance and play are powerful tools of healing and transformation. They are able to break through imposed structures and barriers that may be keeping us from fully participating in our lives. We are communal, sensory beings and inherently connected to the beat of a drum, the chant of a song, or a dance around a fire.
In the Archetypal Dance Adventure, we step into the ancient wisdom of our bodies and explore how we are called to move when we are contemplating these deep concepts. In a safe, silly, and supportive container, we test our limits and capacity for play, fun, and self-expression. This is somatic work on full blast, and all are welcome with open arms.
